Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: being a mama is the hardest best work, in all the ways. While we can attest that there is nothing better, cuter or funnier than our kids, they also tax us in ways we had no idea possible. The lack of sleep and sleep battles, in general, can be big huge bummers, and quite honestly, the stress around child-rearing in this current wild world climate we are living in can be dizzying.
And while over here at Big Moon Sky we don’t need any convincing when it comes to exploring the benefits of CBD
or cannabis in general (let’s just say we’re believers), recently we were thrilled to find that one of our girlfriends tried CBD as an alternative to anti-anxiety medication for the first time.
Full disclosure, our friend, we’ll call her, “Becca,” shared that she was having such a hard time by the end of the day, between pickups, dinner and an extra demanding bedtime routine, that she was considering seeing a doctor and was hoping to be prescribed an anti-anxiety medication. Naturally, we felt concerned about what a hard time she was having but also knew there was certainly a stone left unturned in CBD. We immediately went into an enthusiastic rant about CBD and how diverse it is, how it can provide an incredible sense of calm that still allows you to be present in your life and there was absolutely no reason why she shouldn’t give it a risk-free try. Mind you, Becca would more likely pour a glass of wine before she’d light up a joint, nevertheless, upon our recommendation, she went for a hemp-derived CBD oil concocted for stress-relief, and boy we were thrilled to receive her raving report the next day. And, though not much of a cannabis enthusiast before, our friend Becca, is now certainly open to exploring other products since her super positive experience with CBD.
Because the bottom line is, even mamas (maybe especially), need some serious stress-relief that a glass of wine might just not suit. And, if you haven’t had the pleasure to fully acquaint yourselves with CBD, the wonder-compound, allow us to roll out a couple of fun facts:
- No side effects. WHAT?! You mean, CBD oil, like in a tincture, edible or vape, won’t make you hungover, dependent or even high? It’s true. CBD just gently strips away that edge (some sharper than others) we all have so you have an easier time being present in your body without the often high-pitched noise the anxiety our minds (and lives) can create.
- CBD is a natural anti-inflammatory, meaning, using CBD as an alternative to other stronger medicines, such as opioids, to deal with chronic pain is a risk-free option.
- Hemp-derived CBD can be bought and sold legally throughout the US because it does not come from a cannabis plant.
Bonus fact: CBD (shorthand for cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, so while it has a deeply calming effect, it doesn’t actually get you high.
Of course, you should always seek advice from a medical professional before settling on any particular CBD dosage for a diagnosed illness. However, below, is what The Mayo Clinic has to say about using CBD to treat the following conditions:
- Chronic pain: Take between 2.5 and 20 milligrams (mg) by mouth for no more than 25 days.
- Epilepsy: Consume between 200 and 300 mg of CBD by mouth daily for up to 4.5 months.
- Movement problems associated with Huntington's disease: Taking 10 mg every day for six weeks can help ease movements.
- Sleep disorders: Take between 40 and 160 mg.
- Schizophrenia: Consume between 40 and 1,280 mg CBD by mouth daily for up to 4 weeks.
Glaucoma: One dose of between 20 and 40 mg applied under the tongue can help to relieve pressure in the eye. However, caution is advised - doses greater than 40 mg might actually increase pressure.
Old pros and newbies alike to the CBD scene can both agree, this all-natural compound is a marvel to behold. And as we mentioned, pain-relief and anxiety aren’t the only issues CBD is getting kudos for treating. Some folks have reported success using CBD oil to aid in combating withdrawals when quitting smoking cigarettes. On that note, some pretty impressive numbers are emerging in states that have legalized CBD and marijuana showing that opioid-related deaths have decreased.
And, we think it’s pretty convenient that CBD oil can be consumed in three ways, orally, gastrointestinally or a hybrid of both. If ingested orally, as in a tincture or spray, the effects kick in pretty quickly and last up to three hours. If eaten, as in a baked good or pill it can take up to two hours to feel the effects but will last up to eight to wear off, and if taken as a hybrid, like an infused drink, it will take up to sixty minutes to come on and four or more hours to fade. Not to mention, there are topical CBD balms that can be massaged into your skin to target and relieve local pain immediately.
As you might have noticed, we get pretty pumped when we talk about CBD, but here’s another list of conditions that CBD can aid in relieving that have us like wow:
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- General anxiety disorder
- Panic disorder
- Social anxiety disorder
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
And because of the many side effects and additional symptoms associated with most of the medications prescribed to help with the disorders listed above, CBD is emerging as a promising and safe alternative.
We know, we know, our excitement is a lot, but it’s hard not to get fired up (did someone say fire up?) when we start unpacking all the pros to healing with CBD oil - we just can’t help ourselves!
